Downtown Hot Spot
The City of Centralia is considering the creation of a downtown wireless hot spot or wireless cloud that would be available to our patrons. This hot spot would allow anybody with a laptop to immediately connect to the Internet from anywhere in the downtown. Such a feature would especially benefit travelers from out town staying in downtown hotels and eating in downtown restaurants. The initial screen that an Internet user would see would be a portal advertising some of the major attractions in the City and also directing the user to nearby businesses. Then, for a small fee the user could surf the net for a specified amount of time. The hot spot would be paid for user fees as well as by selling advertising space on the portal.

This is one of the best ideas for the downtown area I have heard in a long time; Centralia needs to catch up with the 21st century! Sure this webpage was a start, but to incorporate a WiFi hotspot in the downtown area would not only provide the community with a service they can't find in surrounding cities, it would bring people to the downtown area and provide economic stimulation to nearby businesses.
You really believe WiFi is the answer? "It would bring people to the downtown area"? Are you serious? How about some STORES rather than vacant buildings?
Hey anonymous, I just thought I would point out to you that NO WHERE did I say that "WiFi is the answer". I said that it was "one of the best ideas for the downtown area," and I still feel that way, so why don't you read a little more carefully next time. Incidentally enough, I am in agreement with you that more stores would be crucial to downtown, but there aren't as many vacant downtown buildings as you allude to.
.....reading more carefully....reading more carefully.....again..."one of the best ideas for the downtown area"...Hmmm.."it would bring people to the downtown area"...yeah..I'm coming downtown because there's WiFi! Tell ya what, count the # of tattoo shops in town. Surf the net while you get a tattoo. There's a concept!
OOhhhh.....did SOME-one not have their coffee this morning....?
I think it's a good idea as well. I'm concerned, however, about this small fee that's mentioned. Ad revenue, sure, but WiFi away from home should be free to the user, in my opinion. It's what WiFi users have come to expect. I don't know why our McDonalds doesn't have it....Mt. Vernon does, so does Carlyle. I'm only just now educating myself on WiFi and all that it implies, I'm sure a larger coverage area is more $$ than just one establishment, but I don't think charging the user by the minute is wise. Just my 2 copper's worth.......
